In early January 2021, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorsed the installation of metal detectors at critical entrances to the U.S. Capitol and House Chamber. It is just one of the measures Pelosi recently instituted for the increased safety of House members. While the motion may seem like a historic first, The Washington Post notes such security measures are the norm in European countries and around the world.

"Metal detectors and other such security features are standard in many of the world’s government buildings," The Post writes. Governments that do not yet have these protections in place, like New Zealand Parliament, have revealed that they are reviewing security practices and are open to making necessary and prudent changes.

Government buildings are not the only institutions embracing tightened security measures, like metal detectors, security x ray machines, and infrared temperature scanners. Learn more about this essential equipment and its widespread use in the U.S. and across the globe.

Metal Detectors in Government Buildings

Every day, as many as one million government workers step inside government buildings. Millions of people, including children, visit these buildings to take part in legal ceremonies, complete and file legal paperwork, and take part in legal formalities. Daily screenings root out dangerous items, like pepper spray, mace, and knives. The equipment is capable of detecting other weapons, like guns and firearms as well; however, thankfully, those items are rarely confiscated from students.

Metal detectors and other security equipment serve several purposes. Not only does the equipment do what it's designed to do, but it also gives administrators, faculty, and students peace of mind following traumatic events across the nation. The National School Safety and Security Services recommends pairing these fixtures with qualified mental health workers, like counselors, psychologists, and social workers. What About Hospitals and Medical Buildings?

Unfortunately, hospitals and medical buildings are vulnerable to security threats, just like government buildings, middle schools, high schools, and higher learning institutions. For example, in July 2016, two people died after a shooting in a Brevard County hospital in Florida.

Since the implementation of metal detectors in just four Florida hospitals, more than 100,000 weapons have been detected and safely confiscated. In the past week, we've had three more victims from school shootings. Two teenagers who had survived the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida last year committed suicide. And a father of a child who died in the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Connecticut also committed suicide. I'm left with so many questions.

What drove these survivors to suicide? Certainly, in the case of the teenagers, we know that the trauma of surviving a school shooting, losing friends to violence, and survivors' guilt were contributing factors. In the case of the Sandy Hook father, losing a child to murder is a life-changing trauma that some parents simply can't survive themselves.

I also wonder, did they simply lose hope? Was the lack of progress on gun violence a factor in these tragic decisions to take their own lives? Many politicians have been quick with their thoughts and prayers, but slow to endorse meaningful change. Meanwhile, new active shooter incidents and school shootings continue to make headlines and lives continue to be lost. It could make anyone lose hope, especially those who are coping with the aftermath of a school shooting in their own lives.

I have yet another question. Were the Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shootings that killed 50 people a factor that contributed to these suicides? After all, Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, announced within ONE DAY of the shootings that her nation would ban semi-automatic weapons. ONE DAY to make a change that the majority of Americans have supported for years. Then, a week later, this spate of suicides in the U.S. Was the juxtaposition of New Zealand's actions alongside America's seeming inability the proverbial "final straw" for these victims?

In the end, we may never know the answers. What we DO know, however, is that there are still many other victims of gun violence in America's schools who continue to suffer, including:

* Survivors of shootings coping with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, guilt, and anxiety.

* Children who struggle with school performance and anxiety as a result of the fear of gun violence. Active shooter drills taking place in schools make it worse.

* Families and friends of school shooting victims -- as well as teachers and school administrators -- who must cope with similar mental health challenges.

* Students, teachers, and school workers who walk into school every single day wondering if that's the day they will get shot.

* Parents who drop their children off wondering if it will be the last time they see their child.

* Teachers, who are being traumatized and even injured by active shooter drills, including situations where they are shot execution-style with plastic bullets.

* First responders and medical staff who care for victims, and the media and cover the tragedies, who all deal with the psychological aftermath of these crises.

Apart from the profound human costs and psychological impact, there's also a financial toll that taxpayers like you and me ultimately pay. After a school shooting, millions of dollars are spent rebuilding school sites and making restitution to victims' families...those are our tax dollars, and they could have gone toward improving our children's education.

Gun violence in schools is a complex issue. We need to address the root causes of violence in schools and protect victims and survivors from the mental health implications of school shootings. That requires societal changes and better mental health care. At the same time, we need regulations that will keep assault weapons off our streets. That requires legislation and gun control, no easy task.

But we also need to protect the future victims -- those whose lives have not yet been personally scarred by gun violence in schools. As the founder of Yates Enterprises, there is one thing I DO know. Metal detectors at schools can prevent guns from getting into schools. Metal detectors literally save lives, NOW. Metal detectors also save lives later. It’s exponential. Every school shooting or active shooter event that we prevent today means fewer students, families, friends, school staff, and communities scarred by gun violence tomorrow.

As a trauma surgeon, I learned to "first, stop the bleeding." And it’s clear: We need to stop the bleeding now, by keeping our schools safe. Metal detectors don't stop people from wanting to do harm in our schools. But they CAN stop many of those people -- and their ability to hurt our children -- at the door. It's a start, and something we can do now...today.

Metal detectors need to be a priority in workplace safety

On February 15, 2019, Gary Martin shot and killed five of his colleagues, injuring six people, including five police officers, at the Henry Pratt Company in Aurora, Illinois. After learning he was fired, the gunman brought a pistol, which he didn’t legally own, to his termination meeting where he opened fire at the manufacturing company he worked for 15 years. Several people involved in the termination meeting are the deceased. Martin, 45, was killed in a shootout with the police.

The weapon

In January 2014, Martin obtained his firearm owner’s identification card, and two months later bought a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handgun. Martin applied for his conceal and carry permit in 2014 but upon a background check, he was flagged for a 1995 aggravated assault case, and the permit was denied. His firearm license was also revoked by the Illinois State Police. Additionally,

Martin had six prior arrests by Aurora police, including for domestic violence-related issues

Since his FOID card was revoked, it’s still under investigation how Martin was in possession with the illegal gun used in the shooting.

Why metal detectors must become a safety standard

The magnitude of loss from these victims’ lives is indescribable. You should be able to go to work without wondering if you’ll be shot - that’s why workplace safety needs to be a priority.

Having metal detectors in and around businesses, schools, hospitals, and other public arenas would deter prospects from bringing guns into these settings while giving authorities a chance to work proactively against threats.

The scene

Eight SWAT teams and 25 -35 agencies responded, with 200 to 300 police officers at the scene.

According to police, here the timeline of the incident:

1:24 p.m.: The incident was called in; officers dispatched to an active shooter call.
1:24 p.m.: Another caller said shots were being fired after an employee was terminated.
1:28 p.m.: First officers responded to the scene.
1:28 p.m.: A determination was made to activate the special response team.
1:30 p.m.: A first report was made of an officer being shot.
1:31 p.m.: It was indicated that there were four victims upstairs and a victim in the bay area. All victims were determined to be deceased at that time.
1:32 p.m.: More shots were fired, and a second officer was reported being shot.
1:34 p.m.: A third officer was reported shot.
1:35 p.m.: A fourth officer was reported shot.
1:37-1:52 p.m.: Personnel was responding to extract some of the employees and victims inside the building.
1:52 until 2:58 p.m.: No contact was made with the offender.
2:58 p.m.: Officers indicated contact was made and confirmation was made that Martin was killed.

4 Dead After Shooting at Mercy Hospital in Chicago

On Monday afternoon, four people, including one police officer, were killed during a shooting at Mercy Hospital. One of the deceased is the gunman. The shooting started around 3pm, after there was a verbal altercation in the hospital’s parking lot. It has been confirmed by authorities that Juan Lopez, a 32 year old man, shot and killed his former fiancé, Tamara O’Neal, who was an emergency room doctor.

After he shot O’Neal, Lopez then went inside the hospital, where he killed police officer, Samuel Jimenez, and pharmacy resident, Dayna Less. Jimenez was taken away from the scene to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, and he later passed away. There was also a second Chicago police officer who was struck by the gunfire on his holster.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the shooting, “tears at the soul of the city,” and he talked about the heroic efforts of those who lost their lives. During the police news conference, Emanuel also said the police officer and hospital staff who lost their lives were, “all doing what they love.”

After the police had arrived at Mercy Hospital to the scene of the shooting, police officers ran towards the gunfire and they saw that Lopez was armed. Lopez then started to shoot at a police cruiser and the police chased him into the hospital.

Once he was inside, Lopez shot Dayna Less, a 24 year old pharmacy resident, as she was getting off of an elevator. Lopez was then shot by a member of the SWAT team, according to sources of CBS2.

The hospital was secured and patients were all safe by 4:40pm, according to officials at Mercy Hospital. The police officers who responded to the shooting were all named heroes and had they not stopped Lopez, there could have been a significantly higher number of casualties.

HB5970, the Safe Spaces in Public Places Act., should be approved now. This is a bill that would require metal detectors in all hospitals. This is important to protect hospital workers, especially now, after the tragic shooting at Mercy Hospital. Rep. La Shawn K. Ford @justice4all44 is the sponsor.

Chicago Mercy Hospital shooting sheds unfortunate light on the importance of hospital safety measures

On November 19, 2018, three people -- an ER doctor, a pharmacy resident, and a CPD officer -- were killed by an active shooter at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. We are deeply saddened by this incident that happened in one of our local hospitals and demand that hospital workers and patients are protected and feel safe.

Dr. Yates was a previous trauma surgeon and has been in numerous situations in the ER and hospital where he was threatened by patients and patient family members. While we cannot understand the magnitude of loss from the victims’ families and friends, we do know that hospital safety needs to be a priority. Having metal detectors in hospitals can help deter prospects from bringing guns and other weapons into medical settings. At the same time, they give authorities a chance to work proactively against threats, not reactively.

Tragedies like this cannot be explained, but Yates Enterprises is on the front line to prevent further occurrences.
